Life after a Tedious Day at Work: Practical Ways to Recharge and Reclaim Your Evenings

October 9, 2026Ola Amor

After a long, tedious day at work, it’s tempting to let the hours slip by in exhaustion or distraction. Yet the way you spend your time once you’ve closed your laptop or left the office matters just as much to your wellbeing as the workday itself. An afternoon or evening spent mindlessly scrolling through social media or replaying stressful moments rarely helps you recover or prepare for tomorrow.

Finding practical ways to recharge after a demanding workday can feel challenging, especially if your routine includes long commutes, family responsibilities or tight budgets. But carving out meaningful rest and small personal joys need not be complicated or costly.

Recognise Your Energy Patterns

What activities boost your mood and energy varies from person to person. Some find a brisk walk or short workout clears their mind and releases tension. Others prefer a quiet ritual, like reading or listening to music, that separates them from their work thoughts.

Try to notice when your energy dips and what helps you feel more centred afterward. Even a brief pause—making a cup of tea mindfully rather than while scrolling your phone—can give your brain a welcome reset.

Set Clear Boundaries Between Work and Home

Especially in hybrid or remote work setups common in many Nigerian cities, the lines between professional and personal time blur easily. Leaving work tasks or devices in a dedicated spot at the end of the day creates a psychological signal that the workday is finished.

Communicate boundaries with colleagues when possible, so they respect your off-hours. Likewise, resist the urge to constantly check emails or messages once you’ve clocked out. This habit tends to prolong the feeling of ‘work mode’ and limits your ability to relax.

Engage in Activities That Light You Up

Consider hobbies or social activities you can look forward to that don’t require much money or preparation. It might be cooking a favourite meal, tending to a small garden patch, calling a close friend or family member, or simply watching a few episodes of a TV series you enjoy.

These moments aren’t frivolous—they replenish your enthusiasm and remind you there is life beyond deadlines and meetings. They encourage sustainable ambition by keeping your motivation balanced, not burnt out.

Practice Mindful Rest and Recovery

Rest doesn’t always mean sleeping, though quality sleep is essential. Mindfulness practices such as gentle breathing exercises, short meditations, or simply sitting quietly outdoors can help reduce stress and anchor you in the present.

Even urban environments in Nigeria offer accessible green spaces or peaceful corners if you look. Engaging your senses—listening to birds, smelling fresh air, feeling sunlight—can be restorative with minimal time or cost investment.

Example Evening Routine

  • 6:00pm: Shut down work devices, change clothes.
  • 6:15pm: Take a 15-minute walk around your neighbourhood or compound.
  • 6:35pm: Prepare and enjoy a simple, nutritious dinner.
  • 7:15pm: Call a friend or family member for a brief chat.
  • 7:45pm: Spend 20 minutes reading or listening to calming music.
  • 8:15pm: Do 5-10 minutes of mindfulness or breathing exercises.
  • 8:30pm onwards: Relax with personal interests or get ready for bed.

Checklist for Recharging After Work

  • Have you set a clear finish time for work and stuck to it?
  • Did you engage in at least one restful or joyful activity after work?
  • Have you avoided screen time related to work after hours?
  • Did you move your body or spend time outdoors?
  • Did you connect meaningfully with another person or yourself?
  • Have you planned sleep or rest time appropriate to your needs?

Successfully unwinding after tedious work days is an ongoing practice rather than a one-off fix. Being gentle with yourself as you experiment helps build habits that sustain wellbeing and productivity. What small change could you try this evening to reclaim your energy and enjoy life beyond work?
